Time to Call the Exterminator!

Last week I had the best intentions to spend the entire Spring Break upstate with the girls. No big deal right?...That's what I thought. Until someone paid us a visit...

No...it wasn't spiders (although the exterminator said we have those too),  it was carpenter ants. It all began innocently enough. A few ants here, a few ants there (they were small so they didn't seem threatening). Then we began seeing bigger ones that flew...(the soldiers if you will). Then the warmer weather came and we would see a few more...still manageable *(manageable = able to kill upon sight). But Monday came, Valentino was back in the city, the weather had topped 70 degrees, we were loving it. We had spent the entire day away from home...when we came back around 4pm all of a sudden I hear Isabel call from the kitchen "Mom Come Here Quick...They are Everywhere!" And as I ran to the kitchen I started to see them in troves...groups of them...coming literally out of the woodwork (that is where they live after all). Upon quick estimation there were 150 in my kitchen. I screamed...called Valentino..then packed a quick bag and made my escape back to NYC where there are no bugs...ever;)

We called the exterminator to come out the following day. Why we didn't think we needed him on speed dial before, is beyond me, as everyone has informed me that pest control is another monthly bill to add to the list.

So do you want the low-down? We have spiders, carpenter ants, and mice (in the basement). He treated for the carpenter ants and now we are in for a treat when we go back upstate this weekend...hundreds of dead bugs scattered around our home. Ahhh country life.

Oh and my good friend (who lives a mile away from us) saw this guy in her backyard this past weekend...who do you call for that?

The mighty black bear call the Catskill Mountains home too! I was hoping they were more of an urban legend around these parts though.

Before I made a run for it I made sure to take a picture or two to share with you. See how they are clustering in groups. Yuck! They were everywhere!
They have wings and fly! They were so confused since the weather was warming up they were flying into us...they were on the floor too...when I accidently crunched one it was pretty gross.

  1. Flying ants? That is quite a hassle. But as long as your exterminators are up for the challenge, it shouldn't pose as a problem. Remember, these bugs bring dirt and sometimes diseases. So if you don't get rid of them ASAP, you could end up getting sick, on top of being bothered by their presence. Take care!

  2. Oh my goodness, flying ants?? I didn't even know those existed. My son is allergic to bees and we have a lot of them in our yard. We need to call an exterminator asap before something bad happens. http://www.americanextermination.com/rat-extermination.php

  3. Yikes! Having your home infested by three kinds of pests must be so frustrating. What's even worse is that aside from having spiders, carpenter ants, and mice on your basement, a mighty black bear is roaming around your neighborhood as well. In any case, I hope you've gotten rid of the pests by now. I'm sure your exterminator has something up his sleeve to get rid of them permanently. Good luck!

  4. Whoa! Having flying ants in your home is definitely not a good sign. I hope you've managed to find the nest, and tackled the issue directly from there. Also, I hope you hadn't experience any appearance of swarming ants in flight, as that is likely the first signs of indoor infestation. Good luck, Jenny! Keep us posted!
